Your wedding day is one of the most significant milestones in your life, and choosing the right date can set the tone for a memorable celebration. As a wedding photographer, I understand the importance of selecting a date that not only holds personal significance but also enhances the overall photography experience. Here are a few key factors to consider from a wedding photographer’s perspective when choosing your wedding date.
First Look
As a photographer, I stress that one of the most important considerations in choosing your wedding date is whether you will be having a first look or not. Why? Because the time of year matters! Let’s say you’re having a winter wedding and choose not to do a first look. During this time of year, the sun can set as early as 5pm. Your ceremony will most likely be around 6 or 7pm. That means that all of your bride and groom portraits – the ones you’ll frame in your home and share on social media – are going to be limited and in a dark area using flash.
Now, if you have a dark and moody style photographer, this will probably fit you just fine. But if you hire a light and airy photographer like myself, then you want those bright and natural light photos! If you have decided you don’t want a first look, then be sure to have your wedding at a time of year where the sun sets at 7:30pm or later so we can still get some natural light photos after the ceremony. As an experienced photographer, I can handle either option whether you opt for a first look or not! But I love being able to give my couples those natural light photos that they hire me for in the first place.

Venue Availability
Your dream venue may influence your wedding date, so it’s essential to check its availability well in advance. Popular venues often book up quickly, especially during peak wedding seasons. Flexibility with your date can increase the likelihood of securing your desired location and photographer.
Seasonal Considerations
Each season offers a unique backdrop for your wedding photos. Spring brings blooming flowers and vibrant colors, while summer offers long days and warm golden-hour light. Fall provides a picturesque landscape with rich, warm tones. Winter weddings can be beautifully captured with a snowy or cozy atmosphere. Consider the aesthetic you envision for your wedding gallery and choose a season that aligns with your preferences and wedding day vibe.
Weather and Climate
Depending on your location, weather conditions can vary significantly throughout the year. Consider the climate of your chosen wedding date and how it might impact your plans. While outdoor weddings can be stunning, having a backup plan for inclement weather is crucial. A seasoned photographer can adapt to different conditions, but having a plan in place ensures you’ll have beautiful photos, rain or shine.
Consider Local Events
Be aware of local events, festivals, or major activities that could impact traffic, accommodations, or the overall atmosphere of your wedding day. Check local calendars to avoid scheduling your celebration on a date that might conflict with other events. For example, you might not want to schedule your wedding in New Orleans around Mardi Gras season.
Special Dates and Holidays
Choosing a wedding date that holds personal significance, such as the anniversary of your first date or the day you got engaged, can add sentimental value to your celebration. However, be mindful of major holidays and events that may affect the availability of venues, vendors, and your guests. Planning around these dates ensures a smoother experience for everyone involved.
Choosing your wedding date is an important decision that requires consideration from both a personal and practical standpoint. As a wedding photographer, my advice is to balance sentimental value with practicality, taking into account the season, weather conditions, venue availability, and the first look choice. By keeping these factors in mind, you’ll not only ensure a seamless wedding day but also create stunning memories that will be captured for a lifetime in your wedding photos.
